moving to columbus soon

i'm just getting started and i can't seem to find much information on some neighborhoods...i've seen a lot of houses for sale very cheap, but not knowing the area, it's hard to decide what's even worth it to call on...many of the ads i've seen are for houses concentrated in the area west of bexley, both north and south. anyone have anything to say about west-side close-in 'hoods?

my sister lives outside of columbus and says that bexley's a decent neighborhood, but that the areas around it vary a whole lot. i'm not looking for the ritzy neighborhoods as i can't afford them. a fixer-upper in a moderately safe working-class neighborhood is just my speed. i don't mind a bit of ghetto as long as it's not deserted houses and crack dealers.

anyone have any ideas? look here, avoid this? advice is greatly appreciated, thanks!

Definitely depends on where you think you'll be spending most of your time in the city, where you'll be working, etc.

Are you looking to be near downtown? The OSU campus area or another university area?

If you're looking for a working class neighborhood, you can definitely rule out Bexley and Upper Arlington.

Hearing that you want to purchase a fixer-upper and *not* be in the ghetto is probably not gonna happen unless you are moving into an area that is already well on its way along the gentrification process (in which case I doubt you'll be finding many cheap fixer-uppers!).

If you don't care too much about contributing to gentrification, then you might be interested in checking out Franklinton, Weinland Park, or the areas near the Franklin Park Conservatory.

Other places further along the gentrification process and a bit more pricey include Olde Towne East (high queer population in that area) and the King Lincoln District (an up and coming neighborhood on the east side, the city is already heavily developing the area).

Other neighborhoods that I would consider "safer" for white folks with money to be moving in to include Grandview or Clintonville. Grandview is more suburban, but still close to downtown (about 20 - 25 minutes by bike). Clintonville is just north of the campus area and well connected to the bus network. There's a nice co-op in the area, and lots of families live in the area, so it's a bit quieter than living amongst all the students and hipsters in the north campus area. There are also some nice places to be had in the areas west of High St. and east of Neil Ave. along King Ave. or Fifth Ave.

Some of the more expensive neighborhoods that are still centrally located include German Village (south of downtown, lots of yuppies and older professionals) and Victorian Village (near the Short North, young professional crowd).

Throw out some more specifics about what you're looking for ... demographics, types of things you like to do, area you may be working in, etc., and I'd be happy to help narrow it down a bit for you.

      Peace!

thanks, jonathan. basically i'm looking for something in relatively livable shape that needs work...i'm not about to rehab a house and i don't really like contributing to gentrification if i can help it :-(

i'm not wealthy and don't need to live in a *classy* neighborhood, i just want it to be safe. i'm a single mom and i don't want to have to keep up with the joneses. i have a college degree but i'm at the beginning of my career and i'm looking for a place to start at a price that won't kill me. i'm hoping to be working on the west side, but i'm not sure exactly where yet. i like artsy districts and parks and downtown areas, but i don't go out much anyway so that's the least concern - a place for my kids to feel safe is all i need. i've been working-class all my life and just got lucky with a little investment money, so a working-class neighborhood is perfect. back home i loved the kind of neighborhoods where there were a lot of funky, interesting people. counterculture is good. don't know how much counterculture there is in Columbus, lol.

i found a few maybes north of bexley, in the area that's kind of bounded by the airport & hwy 62. franklin park was a name i ran across too - and i can't remember the name of the neighborhood north of bexley, but i read that there was some money going into fixing it up, updating schools, etc. the houses i saw advertised were kind of in limbo between official neighborhood boundaries.

Bexley is nice, and Worthington is worth a look. Steer clear of the west side, particularly as you get closer to downtown. I live in Brooklyn now, and I still don't see the same concentrations of crackheads. Depending on your transportation options and work situation, you might want to check out some of the C-Bus bedroom communities. I grew up near Lancaster, and it's a safe, clean, and cheap town in which to live.

    Good luck!

Do you have school aged kids? If so I would probably steer clear of anywhere that would send your children to the disaster known as the City of Columbus schools.

Bexley has middle class areas and upper class areas (with more upper class than middle). Same with Upper Arlington.

I personally think the best suburb in terms of house value with good schools is Hilliard. From downtown it is a little harder to get to since you have to take 70 due west and then I-270 north. In other words there is no direct route. However Hilliard has a lot of stuff to do with community pools, library, etc.

Let me know if you have any other questions. I was born and raised here, moved away, and recently moved back.

I just read a little further down. The area around Franklin Park is not very nice. The part of the city of Columbus between Bexley and downtown is rough. It isn't as bad on High Street as it is on Main Street, but it is rough. Hilliard is on the northwest side. Clintonville is a kind of funky area north of OSU will some affordability and Whetstone Park is there, but I believe it is Columbus City schools. It is a relatively safe area. I agree with the poster above me, if you are going west side, go west of the I-270 outerbelt. Galloway, Grove City, Hilliard, New Rome. Broad Street straight out of Columbus heading west through Franklinton and Hilltop is sort of rough.

<<the disaster known as the City of Columbus schools>> LOL! I'm currently in the total distaster known as the Tucson Unified School District. I doubt Columbus could be worse.

          Thanks, Blue, back to mapquest...

Okay, so Franklin Park isn't exactly the neighborhood I've been looking at. I do understand what everyone is saying about the neighborhoods, and I definitely appreciate the advice. Please understand that I don't want to live in the suburbs. It's not my lifestyle, I hate to drive long distances, and I'm not looking for "nice house, nice school." I'm living in the ghetto here in Tucson, I lived in the ghetto back home, I do understand the problems. I can't afford rent in those neighborhoods, and I certainly can't afford to buy there. I'm not a doctor or a lawyer and I'm barely ready to start lower-level white collar. There are working class neighborhoods, and there are the crack blocks. Maybe too fine a distinction for anyone not accustomed to living

Anyone know anything about the area between Broad and 5th, between Cassidy and James? And north of that, between Sudbury and Cleveland, around Mock Park?

Oh, the last couple neighborhoods you inquired about I'd say no too! How about Clintonville/North University district??? Two thumbs up for these areas!

thanks sarah! i kind of came to conclusion that i was looking in the wrong areas. i decided to let those go.

i'm still looking around...i've also heard that some areas around hilltop are kind of okay if you stay out of the bottoms....i've seen a couple of good deals there too.

i really liked the idea of clintonville but can't seem to find anything so far...

Yay! One of the real estate agents I've contacted just sent me a bunch of properties in Olde Towne East, which really appeals to me as well. I've heard this neighborhood is one where prices are still low but on the rise.....might be worth the investment, and I LOVE old houses......
