Contract gardening

Greetings. I'd like to pose a question for those of you in this tribe.

I'm 33 and have always grown up with a garden in the backyard... always had a "green thumb" as it were. In high school i opted out of the last two years of a catholic education and joined a career center where i took up horticulture and landscape construction. Since the time i graduated i've been working with the same partner and we've done pretty well for ourselves ,yep just the two of us doing over 300k a year (in contracts) here in Ohio. My question to you is this....

...Do you think there's a market for "Contract Gardening"?
By this i mean homeowners would contract to have a garden created.. tilled, fertilized(organic), planted, and cared for (weeded, natural pest control, etc.) on their land. I know a lot of you may do the "dirty work" yourselves .. but my idea will be geared more to the elderly ,urban families ,or green minded individuals. Of course, my theories and ideas have an Ohio base... but i'd like to hear from anyone.. any area or zone.

Reiki classes in Cincinnati this weekend

Healing Today now offers affordable Reiki workshops for all levels in Cincinnati.

due to previous security problems (9 people shot in the oakland,
california area during a halloween party (black gang members
pissed about a girl who dumped a black DJ to date an asian
DJ broke into the party and shot 9 people), black NBC reporter
shot by a black gang member drive-by shooter when he was
reporting a crime in a bad part of san francisco, my getting
physically threatened by a known nazi cyber-terrorist by the
name of troutpoop in ohio when i promoted for love fest SF
last year on pb-cle-raves@hyperreal.org (as a result, troutpoop
got a visit from a US military SWAT team since i am a former
military recruiter of the USAF, army, navy, and marines that
started west coast homeland security in 2003), love fest SF
party kid shot outside the billy graham civic auditoriom by a
black gang member trying to steal a car last year, death threats
on heather fung, san francisco police chief, who spearheaded
several brother busts in SF in response to black gang members
killing prostitutes over money disputes, etc.) and because i
started west coast homeland security in california in 2003, i have
decided to increase the security for love fest SF this year to include
the following...

1. heather fung, san francisco police chief, heading SFPD including
using the mini golf cart style vehicles for crowd control and
re-directing traffick at blocked sections of streets for the event

2. california national guard to do plain clothes undercover security
during the event to help prevent any unwanted black gang member
attacks like last year.

3. hells angels also doing undercover plain clothes security to prevent
car jackings / bike jackings, etc. (i had previously used them to do
security for california oktoberfest and they helped prevent tares who
tried to steal my bike when corrupt parts of the fresno police dept.
failed when they actually thought i was trying to steal my own bike
at a KSEE NBC summer concert in the park event i had promoted
for! turned out the corrupt cop was the one who stole my honorary
caliornia state trooper ID for security breaches!

4. san francisco 49'ers also doing some undercover plain clothes
security. the owner of the san francisco 49'ers is from the same
town i was born in: youngstown, ohio.

5. q*bert to head international b-boys also doing some undercover
security. international b-boys were blessed by pope john paul II,
and serve as secret service for the pope when he comes to
america. the ones behind planet b-boy, the movie are korean
b-boys who have won numerous international competitions.

6. once again, i will be in fresno, california for the after parties to
serve as a pit stop for travelers from LA and back to LA, so they
don't fall asleep at the wheel on the way back to LA, they can

Recycling Project

Currently I am working on a "Texas Recycle" project. I am customizing 26 gal. cans. There is a daytime photo of one in my album. The logos will be lit at night, like an "exit" sign. I am going to try to recycle at the major events in the Austin area (Houston, San Antonio, Dallas are close enough...+/- 3 hour drive). Anyhow, I think some of y'all should take on the project as well. Obviously there is still a problem with not recycling at major events.

moving to columbus soon

i'm just getting started and i can't seem to find much information on some neighborhoods...i've seen a lot of houses for sale very cheap, but not knowing the area, it's hard to decide what's even worth it to call on...many of the ads i've seen are for houses concentrated in the area west of bexley, both north and south. anyone have anything to say about west-side close-in 'hoods?

my sister lives outside of columbus and says that bexley's a decent neighborhood, but that the areas around it vary a whole lot. i'm not looking for the ritzy neighborhoods as i can't afford them. a fixer-upper in a moderately safe working-class neighborhood is just my speed. i don't mind a bit of ghetto as long as it's not deserted houses and crack dealers.

anyone have any ideas? look here, avoid this? advice is greatly appreciated, thanks!

"Money On Trees"

Big cash nearly fell into Shunka Wakan's lap. Other Earth First!ers are kinda happy it didn't.

As the jury trial for the civil suit Kathryn Miller v. the Trees Foundation puttered to a start last week inside Courtroom 3 at the Humboldt County Courthouse, Shunka Wakan — a key witness for the plaintiff — spent mornings sitting on the hard wooden benches in the long hallway outside the courtroom. During breaks, Miller's attorney Linda Mitlyng, would come out of the courtroom to join him. But otherwise, as other people and their legal affairs swirled around him in a warm, odiferous bath of humanity, Shunka sat alone. Or, sometimes, he stood alone, straight-spined, his small, stocky body swallowed by the huge, stiff blue suit out of which his newly shorn, razor-scraped bald head poked vulnerably — as if, at any moment, the suit could gulp once more and he'd disappear completely. Always, he clutched a paper folder with a wolf's face on its cover.

The North Coast Earth First! Media guru had shaved off his woolly rust-tinged brown hair and beard the night before jury selection started, after discussing it with attorney Mitlyng. Now, it took an uncertain moment to recognize him. Then, of course: Shunka's light blue eyes in the pink-pale face, Shunka's closed-lip smile, Shunka's trademark husky murmur, "Mm-hmm, for sure," in response to a comment.

In Courtroom 3, the amiable but no-nonsense Judge Christopher Wilson's domain, the fate of a $185,000 donation dangled. Would the plaintiff, donor Kathryn Miller, prevail in her claim that the defendant, the Trees Foundation, was not in fact the intended recipient of her generous gift? That Shunka Wakan's NCEF! Media Center and the treesitters were? Or would the Trees Foundation convince the jury that, in fact, the money was intended all along for Trees, with no instructions attached for funneling it elsewhere?

In her opening arguments, Miller's attorney, Mitlyng, said the case came down to "fraud and broken promises." "She believed [Trees] would hold [the money] in trust, for the benefit of North Coast Earth First!" said Mitlyng. The defense's attorney, Richard Idell, countered in his opening argument that the donation was an unconditional gift and Miller never wrote letters of instruction — as Miller claims she did. "Ms. Miller ... didn't do anything. She took the check [from her mother's estate] and flipped it over and wrote on the back, 'Payable to the Trees Foundation,'" said Idell.

Miller's claim sought the return of her $185,000, plus interest.

Out in the hallway, Shunka waited to tell his side of the story. Maybe he thought about the magical donation that never materialized, and now probably never would. Maybe he thought about the other times he'd been in this courthouse — dozens of times, along with other activists, often before Judge Wilson, answering to charges of trespassing and other forms of civil disobedience in the woods. Likely, he wondered when they were finally going to call him in to testify — it was taking forever in there. He'd even sent out an e-mail prematurely to the several hundred subscribers to his NCEF! online group erroneously announcing he would be first up to testify.

By the end of Friday's court session, Miller was still on the stand. Perhaps Monday it would be Shunka's turn. Whenever it was, he would be testifying on Miller's behalf; but he wasn't a party to the lawsuit. And in the end, after hearing all of the evidence, the jury would be determining who was telling the truth about intentions and letters of instructions. Shunka was just there to provide context and evidence in a contract dispute.

But to a number of forest activists, including a half dozen or so who appeared in the audience last Friday to watch the trial unfold, that context matters more to them than the legal questions. They say this lawsuit has placed a strain on the environmental community that could do as much damage as an ill-felled redwood that takes down other giants in its descent. They disapprove of the lawsuit, and they blame Shunka for it. And, they say, it's just another example of how Shunka has commandeered the North Coast Earth First! identity and used it for purposes that nobody else in the amorphous but consensus-driven local Earth First! movement has agreed to.

"For a lot of us, when we read about the lawsuit, this is kind of like Shunka on trial," said long-time forest activist Deane Rimerman last Friday, calling from Olympia, Wash. "And, to what extent is he worthy of that money?"

Kathryn Miller wanted her money to go toward saving trees, she said on the witness stand last Thursday. The slender 59-year-old was dressed in a pink print skirt and white sweater, with her gray-streaked dark hair pulled back into a neat, thin braid tinted slightly green. (Little did the jury know that Miller had spent the night in jail, in blue jail duds, and then had been "dressed out," in court lingo, in her street clothes before being escorted into the court by the bailiff. Miller had been arrested the week before, on Sept. 17, when she arrived in civil court for the pre-trial readiness hearing; according to the misdemeanor criminal charges filed against her, Miller allegedly had made annoying phonecalls to Barbara Ristow of the Trees Foundation all hours of the day and night.)

On the stand, Miller described how she became an activist. She remembered how, when she was a child in Orinda, her mother decided to stop spraying the beautiful oak trees on their property after reading Rachel Carson's Silent Spring. "And then, when my son was 9, we were watching the news on TV about the Chernobyl nuclear power plant meltdown. And my son said to me, 'I wish I'd never been born. I don't think I'll get to live a full life.'"

She protested the building of the Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant. She started a peace action group in the late 1980s in San Jose. She did nonviolent protests at the Nevada Test Site. And in 1990, she came up with some of her fellow protestors to help set up the camp for Redwood Summer, and to take part in demonstrations. She's been on and off involved in Earth First! actions in Humboldt ever since, she said, including huffing in supplies for treesitters and huffing out their garbage. She'd also, at one point, bought a condo in Arcata.

In 2004, Miller sold her condo and bought an acre of farmland, already planted with coffee, in Guatemala. She put in fruit trees to shade the coffee. That same year, her mother, who lived in Sonoma, died. "The last time I saw her was in 2003," said Miller. "She told me when she died, she was going to leave me some money. I told her I'd use it to further my work for the forest. And she was pleased, because she loved the treesitters and the forest."

Shortly after learning of her mother's death, Kathryn Miller sought out Shunka Wakan in front of the food co-op in Arcata, where he "tabled" to raise funds for the North Coast Earth First! Media office — selling T-shirts, and stickers, offering pamphlets, accepting donations. She'd known Shunka for about five years, she said.

"I said to him, I was going to inherit some money: What was the best way to get that to the North Coast Earth First!?"

In the spring of 2005, Shunka Wakan was floating above the treetops. "I was so excited," the 32-year-old said in an interview a few weeks ago, sitting inside his tiny but colorful North Coast Earth First! Media office in Arcata, walls covered in art and topo maps — including one of Buckeye Mountain, where in 2000-2001, during the "Mattole Free State" action, Shunka and others hiked 14 miles through waist-high snowdrifts to save trees.

Kathryn Miller, he recalled, had come up to him excitedly as he walked along the sidewalk outside the Arcata Co-op and said, "I just donated $185,000 to North Coast Earth First!'"

She'd talked to him the year before about making the donation — she'd said she was anticipating an inheritance from her mother's estate, and she wanted to make a big donation to his group. He'd told her to make it through the Trees Foundation, which handled the NCEF! Media office's finances through an arrangement that had been established years ago. (The Trees Foundation is an umbrella organization formed in 1991 to assist smaller environmental groups. As a 501(c)3 nonprofit, it can accept large, tax-deductible donations on behalf of affiliates, and provide professional resources. And it can lead large campaigns, like the one to save the Headwaters Forest back in the '90s.)

Well, now she'd finally done it.

Miller and Shunka agreed to meet at Fiesta Café in Sunny Brae, so she could tell him how she wanted the money spent: She wanted, straight away, for someone to organize a mediated workshop for the local Earth First! activists on ageism and sexism, issues she thought were fracturing the movement. And, she wanted the bulk of the donation to help support the forest activists who blockade logging roads and hunker up in ancient redwoods to fend off loggers' saws.

Not long after, Shunka was on his way to have lunch with some folks from the Trees Foundation, where they'd talk about Miller's wishes.

"Our media outreach was going to get a big boost," Shunka said. "The donation would keep the EF! office going for many years. So I walked into the Wildflower Café feeling elated, thinking we got all this money."

Barbara Ristow and Doug Wallace of the Trees Foundation were there. "I was super excited," Shunka said, "and I said, 'This is great, this big donation. Isn't it wonderful?' We ordered food, and still I'm all excited, talking about the money, but I notice they're looking nervously at each other. [Finally], they said, 'Well, we're just shocked that you think this money was for you.' And I was like, 'I just met with the donor, and that's what she said.' And they're like, 'Well, let's go ahead and plan the workshop and deal with that later.' I remember that, because it put me at ease."

After that, Shunka said he gave Trees a list of people he thought might benefit from the mediator-run workshop. "Some were people I knew had beefs with me, but I was willing to bring 'em into the circle and talk about it."

According to some vague accounts, the workshop was a disaster. One person who was there claims that Shunka, at one point, pounded his fists on the floor, blustered, then got up and stormed out, yelling as he walked away. Shunka says that's overblown.

"The letter from Kathryn Miller to Barbara Bristow said she wanted the mediation to be a safe place, safe to be emotional," he said. "And I think people are saying 'I freaked out.' The freak-out reports are exaggerated. It's just part of this ongoing character assassination. People say I was 'red-faced.' But my face is naturally red."

In late 2005, while Shunka was in Seattle, a friend called him from Arcata to say a woman had come by asking for the office key. She had a list of equipment she wanted to take away. The friend didn't give her the key.

When Shunka got back from Seattle, he discovered his reimbursement funds from Trees had been "frozen." He also learned about a letter someone in the NCEF! movement had circulated for signatures and then sent to Mark Knipper, who handled the Trees Foundation transactions for the NCEF! Media office. It said, in essence, "We don't want Shunka running EF!"

"I called the Trees Foundation," Shunka recalled. "I was sick, it was the middle of the winter, I'm trying to table, it's raining, it's cold. And Barbara Ristow told me, 'You just need to have a meeting [with the other Earth First!ers] and come to a group consensus on what the Trees Foundation funding should be used for."

The meeting never happened — nobody could agree to meet, said Mark Knipper, also in an interview last week. Knipper is a social worker and a long-time activist who had been the contact person between Trees and NCEF! Media. "So it ate itself," Knipper said. "And although I'm former Navy, a mariner, I said I'm not going down with this ship. So I divorced myself from it ... and signed it all back to Trees."

The NCEF! Media office was dropped from the Trees Foundation altogether.

Shunka and the NCEF! Media office never did see any of the big donation. Miller didn't even know that, he said, until she phoned him up in the summer of 2006, more than a year after she made the donation, to ask about a guy named "Jungle," who had been reported as missing on the NCEF! hotline. Miller was spending much of her time in Guatemala now, where she was raising fruit trees; after she'd made her big donation, Hurricane Stan had struck — she spent the ensuing year mopping up the mess.

First, Shunka told her Jungle was still missing. Then he told her about the money.

"I said, 'Yeah, they told me it wasn't for us,'" said Shunka. "And she said, 'I meant for all of it to go to you guys.' She sounded real upset. And I was like, 'I knew it! I knew it!'"

Shunka tried to sue Trees in small claims court, but it went nowhere.

Miller filed a claim against the Trees Foundation on Oct. 5, 2006, in Humboldt County Superior Court, seeking the return of the $185,000 plus interest so she could distribute the money herself.

And if she wins? "She may just spread it out more," said Shunka. "She's got tree planting ideas. Maybe she could buy a grove. She'd maybe not give it all to Earth First! this time. It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that Trees blew for us."

On an uncomfortably hot afternoon last week, four forest activists who'd agreed to an interview for this story — Jeff, Shaggy, Sparrow and Farmer — sat on the ground at the Arcata Marsh next to a log bench on which a teeming crew of red ants worked a splintered notch. Someone had come along here in 1999 and carved a grouping of faces — bearded, grimacing, possibly mourning faces — onto the log and signed it Daniel. The carving had been drenched in red paint, and burnished by years of sitters.

"It kind of reminds me of the memorial for Gypsy," said one of them. "With the red paint."

Gypsy was the forest name of David Nathan Chain, who in September 1998, during an Earth First! action at Grizzly Creek, was crushed to death by a tree felled by an enraged logger. Farmer, actually, was there — he was just 16, but had a year of activism already under his belt. And Shunka was there — it was Shunka's first forest action.

Farmer, Shag, Sparrow and Jeff first made it clear that they spoke for themselves alone, although they participate in various forest defense affinity groups: Farmer works for the Mattole Wildlands Defense Group now, watchdogging the California Department of Forestry for new timber harvest plans, and keeping an eye on a Pacific Lumber Co. watershed analysis. Shag, who saw his first redwood about five years ago, helps keep the Fern Gully treesit village in Freshwater functioning. Jeff, who grew up in the high desert, and fell in love with the woods, works with the Nanning Creek treesit just outside of Scotia, as well as other groups. Sparrow, who was drawn to forest action because the cultural landscape was "like a folktale" he couldn't resist, is with the Fern Gully affinity group. These groups are all part of the Humboldt Forest Defense Association, a collective with a website but no formal structure.

The HFDA sprang into being six years ago — about the time the entity called North Coast Earth First! had essentially dissolved. It would take a book to describe that drawn-out dissolution — a book of lost causes, won causes, waning media interest, Judi Bari's death, Gypsy's death, ego-spurred squabbles, interpersonal catastrophes, a war overseas, hurricanes. And while the HFDA activists might still cherish the Earth First! name — the movement — in their hearts, it's now been further complicated by what you might call the Shunka effect.

"I still feel in many ways solidarity with the greater Earth First! movement abroad," said Farmer. "But in this county, in this climate, if you say you're with the North Coast Earth First!, many people associate you with North Coast Earth First! Media."

Shunka revived the North Coast Earth First! office around 2002. And he did what previous office managers had done — tabled, put out news releases, wrote articles for other publications. But it wasn't like the old days, in the '90s, when hundreds of people were getting arrested in forest actions and the jail support phone and legal resources were in constant use.

Shunka first worked in an office in Eureka, then later moved to Arcata. He called his outfit the NCEF! Media Center. For a time, he and other "affinity groups" tried to work together. But he alienated some people. He took over the North Coast Earth First! website. He controlled the North Coast Earth First! email list of 300 or more subscribers to the news alerts. He sent out press releases on his own.

"I felt the North Coast Earth First! Media Center was a unilateral effort on Shunka's part," said Farmer. Whereas, in the old days, "spokespeople were decided on by the group. And if you wrote an article it was passed by everyone. I feel Shunka appointed himself spokesperson at some point."

Many also claim they've been subject to a lashing anger from Shunka.

"I won't work with him because I pledge nonviolence in my actions," said Shag. "I don't believe he pledges the same thing. He has exhibited violent behavior towards me and towards other activists in my presence."

"He's a bear," said Jeff, making claw-fists with his hands.

But the sad thing is, all of this infighting probably has done nothing to help the actual trees. And the mediation workshop Kathryn Miller wanted didn't fix matters. Now, there was her lawsuit.

"When I heard about this lawsuit, I thought, the Trees Foundation does not deserve to be attacked in that way," said Farmer. "There's much bigger issues that need to be dealt with — with Maxxam and old-growth logging. ...If you look at Fern Gully and Nanning Creek (the Bonanza timber harvest plan), there's hundreds of old growth acres still standing whose fate is unclear."

Shag put it more bluntly: "If [Miller] knew Shunka and wanted to get the money to North Coast Earth First! Media, she should've given it to Shunka. But if she was trying to get it to treesits and forest defense, then the money went to the right place.

"My problem is this whole representation thing. There's people in the trees — how do you know who to get the money to, to help them?"

Shunka knows that a lot of fellow activists aren't happy with his role in the donation dispute. He also knows how some people talk about him and say he's hard to get along with. "I'm just standing up for the truth," he said. "And people don't like it. To me, it feels like a small clique of people who don't like me. I feel a lot of love and support in this community."

He certainly doesn't come off right away as someone who's angry, or who lashes out, or who locks the office and doesn't let people in. Why, recently, he helped a young woman hook up with the treesitters so she could learn the ropes. (Shaggy said that's proof Shunka doesn't have direct connections with the people doing direct action; but you can't deny it's a connection.)

It's probably a bad idea to ask Darryl Cherney, one of the founders of the local Earth First! movement, what he thinks of Shunka Wakan, whose real name is Jason Wilson. (Shunka tells a story of how he was named by a Lakota medicine man on the banks of the Cheyenne River in South Dakota in 1995. "Shunka Wakan," meaning "great dog," is only part of it. There's a secret part after that — altogether, his name means "the humble man called horse.")

"Shunka's a wingnut," Cherney said over the phone last Friday, sounding cheerfully vitriolic. "I have a 10-verse song about Shunka."

There's no other word for it but "mean." But Cherney and Shunka have history — not all of it sour. Cherney said Shunka laughed when he heard the song, at least the first time.

"I met Shunka in 1998," Cherney said. "And I know he knew Julia ["Butterfly" Hill, whom Shunka had come west to find]. That was a good thing, helping Julia. That was good Shunka."

Cherney had even pushed for Shunka to go to Houston to talk with Charles Hurwitz, whose Maxxam Corp. bought out the old Pacific Lumber company back in 1985 and quickly became the forest activists' number one villain. Shunka went.

But now? "The current status of Shunka and me," Cherney said, "is that Shunka has sent me five or eight or nine e-mails threatening to sue me. Shunka is a joke."

Cherney can talk for hours about the problems he's had with Shunka over the years. His main point, though, is what has Shunka done for the trees lately?

"My question is, where's your topo maps?" he asked. "Where's your wilderness preservation proposal? Where's your lobbyist team in Sacramento?"

It has to be that, on some level, even the people in the movement who don't like Shunka understand somewhat where he's coming from. So he's emotional. Passionate. Perhaps he's caught up so completely in the cause he can't let go. Or, who knows — maybe he's a phony, like he accused Knipper of being back in 2005.

But being a forest activist comes with perils beyond the obvious physical ones.

"I'm really trying to have compassion for Shunka, even though he's kind of attacked us," said Susy Barsotti by phone from Laytonville a couple of weeks ago. Barsotti is president of the Trees Foundation board, and she says the lawsuit has held Trees hostage, unable to function fully. "I've been mystified and dismayed that he's participated like this in the suit. But Shunka witnessed Gypsy's death. And I think he may have post-traumatic stress syndrome. I don't think he's recovered from it. And that can affect your behavior."

A number of people mentioned this, actually, about Shunka. And he often refers to Gypsy's death himself. In an article titled "What Luna has taught me," posted on the website of Julia "Butterfly" Hill's organization, Circle of Life, Shunka writes: "I decided to commit to doing ground support after witnessing the death of David Nathan "Gypsy" Chain on September 17, 1998 ... I remember looking across the valley as we hiked up that day, seeing the rolling hills of forests and clear-cuts, and thinking out loud, "That's why we're here!" Seeing Gypsy's life taken from him, and then seeing the corruption and lies of the Humboldt County Sheriffs ... really opened my eyes to the situation our old-growth forests face."

Later, he did ground support for Hill in her second year in Luna. And in the same article on her website, something else Shunka writes indicates how ready he was to devote himself to a cause: "Being on the support team was the top priority in my life, and I was happy knowing that everything else revolved around when I'd be needed for the next supply run. I never felt lost because I knew what I was doing. That was a feeling I had not felt in years, between feeling dissatisfaction with life in college, and then more dissatisfaction with life as a minimum-wage worker after college. Before joining Julia's ground support team I was unhappy, even to the point of tears, wondering if my entire life was going to be a minimum-wage nightmare ...."

Pure devotion, without benefit of a little hypocrisy, could drive anyone batty. Deane Rimerman, the activist from Olympia who said it is Shunka who is on trial, said it's not uncommon for intense, stressful movements like Earth First! to produce an army of walking wounded. And he's been around, in forest actions up and down the coast, for long enough to know; he was the one, in fact, who "got the maps and led the first hikers up to the hill" to the Gypsy Mountain campaign and Luna treesit.

"In the forest activist movement, there's very little that's rewarding," Rimerman said. "There's a lot of post traumatic stress syndrome. All of us get it. Once you've been through the court process, and the jail process, and seen 1,000-year-old trees get cut down that you really cared about and thought you could save — it's devastating."

That alone, setting aside the troubles with Shunka, could explain the many rifts that have occurred within the local EF! ranks over the years. Josh Brown, who moved to Humboldt in 1995 right before the peak of the Headwaters campaign, said one of the unique qualities of Earth First! is that it "is primarily a youth movement."

"A lot of people that come through are young, are passionate — and it's a wonderful thing," he said. They get thrown into leadership positions quickly — and then they get burned out. Many move quickly on to other things. Brown stayed in longer than most. "When I left [in 2001], I was 30 years old. And I'd been a full-time activist since I was 18."

Paradoxically, said Brown, the youthful draw and the departure of seasoned activists leaves the movement with "no elders to kind of sit around and coach the [new kids]."

The movement also draws strong personalities, he said. Tenacious ones, too, like Shunka's.

"Shunka, I think he really does have a big heart," said Brown. "And I think he does care for the forest."

Last Friday, following the morning session of Miller v. Trees, a group of the Humboldt Forest Defense Association activists stood on the courthouse steps talking. The door opened, and Shunka walked out and down the steps toward the group. They didn't greet him. After a time, he tried to talk to one of them, Jeff. Jeff walked away. Shunka followed him, then stopped and talked to another guy. Then he stood alone again.

"Trees Foundation Wins"

The jury in the civil case Kathryn Miller v. the Trees Foundation decided in favor of Trees, after deliberating all day Tuesday. (See "Money on Trees," Oct. 4).

Miller is the long-time forest activist who inherited a bundle from her mother and then signed $185,000 over to the Trees Foundation. In her lawsuit, she claimed she had intended the money to be passed through Trees to one of its affiliates, North Coast Earth First! Media, run by Shunka Wakan. She claimed she had made her intentions clear, verbally and in writing, and that Trees had agreed to the conditions, then broken its promise and kept the money. Trees denied making such promises, and said it had never seen any letters or heard of instructions to give the money to NCEF! Media. (Also, somewhat relatedly, in criminal court on Tuesday Miller pleaded no contest to charges that she had made annoying phonecalls to Barbara Ristow of the Trees Foundation.)

So, that's that. Now, there are only the pieces to pick up.

For Shunka Wakan — featured in last week's Journal as a central figure in a messy nest of infighting that has fractured the current ranks of local Earth First!ians — it could be a long, lonely patching together of lost friends and broken alliances. Not only did he and Miller lose their attempt to retrieve her donation, but now he's been banned from the North Coast Co-op.

Yes, that happened last week. It was Thursday, around 4:15 in the evening, and two activists with the Humboldt Forest Defense Association were tabling — hawking brochures and such — outside the Co-op. It's an activity Shunka himself has spent many a day doing in that very same spot, raising cash to pay for his NCEF!Media outreach work and other causes. And, well, these two fellows, Jeff and Farmer, were on Shunka's shit list, now. They'd spoken gently, but unfavorably, about Shunka's doings in the North Coast Earth First! arena — said he lashed out at people, said he commandeered NCEF! resources, and so forth. Here's a snippet of Jeff's account of what happened, which he sent to the NCJ in an e-mail on Friday:

"Shunka was removed from the Arcata Co-op yesterday after a scuffle with myself and another activist around 5 p.m. Well, he wasn't exactly removed, but APD was called. He was asked to leave after threatening to flip over the HFD donation table while stating he was 'like Jesus in the marketplace ...'"

Sue Coulter, manager of the Arcata Co-op, recounted on Friday how an employee walking by heard the argument and went inside to get her. "So I went out to talk to [Shunka], because it's not the first time we've had problems," she said. "Most of the time, he's fine. Most of the time, I stick up for him." One time, she said, she even called the police to protect Shunka after someone had threatened him. "But he gets into arguments. I tried to talk to him. I told him to leave. ... He was causing a scene, right by the door, and I can't have it. He refused to leave. ... I said, fine. I went into the store. He followed me into the store, and he was still yelling at me, 'Oh, now you're going to call the police on me.'" Coulter called the police, but Shunka left before they arrived.

Shunka, waiting in the courthouse for the jury verdict Tuesday, said Coulter did indeed ask him to leave and he did, indeed, refuse to. As for the HFD tablers, he said he merely asked them why they had Trees Foundation literature on their table. "I said, 'Why do you want to represent these people?'" And then, he said, "Jeff accused me of embezzling — he said this in public. He said, 'You've embezzled thousands of dollars from the Earth First! movement through the years.' And I complained to one of the employees who was walking by. Because that's serious, accusing someone of embezzling."

But Shunka said the whole thing's yet another attack on him. "I don't consider I was yelling. We were talking. I'm an emotional person, I concede to that. I speak from my heart. I don't scream at people. I would love to — but I don't."

In his email, Jeff with HFD predicted Shunka would leave town within weeks, if not sooner. But at the courthouse, even before the verdict, Shunka said he wasn't going anywhere.

"I'm just going to continue to run the Earth First! office and continue to call Humboldt County home," he said. He's also going to write a letter to the Co-op, complaining about how he gets scapegoated and booted out of there even when other people, he says, are the culprits. And, as for the Miller v. Trees case, he said, he and Miller may now take their complaint to another venue.

I have been reflecting on my twenties and the last time I was in ohio I went back to campus and cried my eyes out over the loss of all the places I had spent so many nights having the best time. i live in seattle now moved in 94 so I'm looking for photos between 89 and 94. If digital cameras had been around back then I'm sure I would have pleanty of photos from then but alas. Nobody in seattle believes any of the stories I tell them from those times. Only my friend that moved here with me can backme up and still people don't believe. Any help out there. thanks laura

drawing classes in Central Ohio?

I volunteer at the front desk at the Stonewall center (the GLBT services agency) on High St. in the Short North, and recently someone called in saying he was new in town (Dublin) and was wanting to meet people (not necessarily for hookups, it soon became clear).

At one point in the conversation, he asked if I knew where he could register for art classes, like drawing classes.

I gave him a rather vague answer, suggesting the community-based adult-ed classes like the ones at Upper Arlington and Worthington. It's my understanding that OSU is no longer doing the Creative Activities Program, aka CAP? Is that true?

What advice would you have given to someone looking to take an art class in Columbus?

Money On Trees

Big cash nearly fell into Shunka Wakan's lap. Other Earth First!ers are kinda happy it didn't.

As the jury trial for the civil suit Kathryn Miller v. the Trees Foundation puttered to a start last week inside Courtroom 3 at the Humboldt County Courthouse, Shunka Wakan — a key witness for the plaintiff — spent mornings sitting on the hard wooden benches in the long hallway outside the courtroom. During breaks, Miller's attorney Linda Mitlyng, would come out of the courtroom to join him. But otherwise, as other people and their legal affairs swirled around him in a warm, odiferous bath of humanity, Shunka sat alone. Or, sometimes, he stood alone, straight-spined, his small, stocky body swallowed by the huge, stiff blue suit out of which his newly shorn, razor-scraped bald head poked vulnerably — as if, at any moment, the suit could gulp once more and he'd disappear completely. Always, he clutched a paper folder with a wolf's face on its cover.

The North Coast Earth First! Media guru had shaved off his woolly rust-tinged brown hair and beard the night before jury selection started, after discussing it with attorney Mitlyng. Now, it took an uncertain moment to recognize him. Then, of course: Shunka's light blue eyes in the pink-pale face, Shunka's closed-lip smile, Shunka's trademark husky murmur, "Mm-hmm, for sure," in response to a comment.

In Courtroom 3, the amiable but no-nonsense Judge Christopher Wilson's domain, the fate of a $185,000 donation dangled. Would the plaintiff, donor Kathryn Miller, prevail in her claim that the defendant, the Trees Foundation, was not in fact the intended recipient of her generous gift? That Shunka Wakan's NCEF! Media Center and the treesitters were? Or would the Trees Foundation convince the jury that, in fact, the money was intended all along for Trees, with no instructions attached for funneling it elsewhere?

In her opening arguments, Miller's attorney, Mitlyng, said the case came down to "fraud and broken promises." "She believed [Trees] would hold [the money] in trust, for the benefit of North Coast Earth First!" said Mitlyng. The defense's attorney, Richard Idell, countered in his opening argument that the donation was an unconditional gift and Miller never wrote letters of instruction — as Miller claims she did. "Ms. Miller ... didn't do anything. She took the check [from her mother's estate] and flipped it over and wrote on the back, 'Payable to the Trees Foundation,'" said Idell.

Miller's claim sought the return of her $185,000, plus interest.

Out in the hallway, Shunka waited to tell his side of the story. Maybe he thought about the magical donation that never materialized, and now probably never would. Maybe he thought about the other times he'd been in this courthouse — dozens of times, along with other activists, often before Judge Wilson, answering to charges of trespassing and other forms of civil disobedience in the woods. Likely, he wondered when they were finally going to call him in to testify — it was taking forever in there. He'd even sent out an e-mail prematurely to the several hundred subscribers to his NCEF! online group erroneously announcing he would be first up to testify.

By the end of Friday's court session, Miller was still on the stand. Perhaps Monday it would be Shunka's turn. Whenever it was, he would be testifying on Miller's behalf; but he wasn't a party to the lawsuit. And in the end, after hearing all of the evidence, the jury would be determining who was telling the truth about intentions and letters of instructions. Shunka was just there to provide context and evidence in a contract dispute.

But to a number of forest activists, including a half dozen or so who appeared in the audience last Friday to watch the trial unfold, that context matters more to them than the legal questions. They say this lawsuit has placed a strain on the environmental community that could do as much damage as an ill-felled redwood that takes down other giants in its descent. They disapprove of the lawsuit, and they blame Shunka for it. And, they say, it's just another example of how Shunka has commandeered the North Coast Earth First! identity and used it for purposes that nobody else in the amorphous but consensus-driven local Earth First! movement has agreed to.

"For a lot of us, when we read about the lawsuit, this is kind of like Shunka on trial," said long-time forest activist Deane Rimerman last Friday, calling from Olympia, Wash. "And, to what extent is he worthy of that money?"

Kathryn Miller wanted her money to go toward saving trees, she said on the witness stand last Thursday. The slender 59-year-old was dressed in a pink print skirt and white sweater, with her gray-streaked dark hair pulled back into a neat, thin braid tinted slightly green. (Little did the jury know that Miller had spent the night in jail, in blue jail duds, and then had been "dressed out," in court lingo, in her street clothes before being escorted into the court by the bailiff. Miller had been arrested the week before, on Sept. 17, when she arrived in civil court for the pre-trial readiness hearing; according to the misdemeanor criminal charges filed against her, Miller allegedly had made annoying phonecalls to Barbara Ristow of the Trees Foundation all hours of the day and night.)

On the stand, Miller described how she became an activist. She remembered how, when she was a child in Orinda, her mother decided to stop spraying the beautiful oak trees on their property after reading Rachel Carson's Silent Spring. "And then, when my son was 9, we were watching the news on TV about the Chernobyl nuclear power plant meltdown. And my son said to me, 'I wish I'd never been born. I don't think I'll get to live a full life.'"

She protested the building of the Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant. She started a peace action group in the late 1980s in San Jose. She did nonviolent protests at the Nevada Test Site. And in 1990, she came up with some of her fellow protestors to help set up the camp for Redwood Summer, and to take part in demonstrations. She's been on and off involved in Earth First! actions in Humboldt ever since, she said, including huffing in supplies for treesitters and huffing out their garbage. She'd also, at one point, bought a condo in Arcata.

In 2004, Miller sold her condo and bought an acre of farmland, already planted with coffee, in Guatemala. She put in fruit trees to shade the coffee. That same year, her mother, who lived in Sonoma, died. "The last time I saw her was in 2003," said Miller. "She told me when she died, she was going to leave me some money. I told her I'd use it to further my work for the forest. And she was pleased, because she loved the treesitters and the forest."

Shortly after learning of her mother's death, Kathryn Miller sought out Shunka Wakan in front of the food co-op in Arcata, where he "tabled" to raise funds for the North Coast Earth First! Media office — selling T-shirts, and stickers, offering pamphlets, accepting donations. She'd known Shunka for about five years, she said.

"I said to him, I was going to inherit some money: What was the best way to get that to the North Coast Earth First!?"

In the spring of 2005, Shunka Wakan was floating above the treetops. "I was so excited," the 32-year-old said in an interview a few weeks ago, sitting inside his tiny but colorful North Coast Earth First! Media office in Arcata, walls covered in art and topo maps — including one of Buckeye Mountain, where in 2000-2001, during the "Mattole Free State" action, Shunka and others hiked 14 miles through waist-high snowdrifts to save trees.

Kathryn Miller, he recalled, had come up to him excitedly as he walked along the sidewalk outside the Arcata Co-op and said, "I just donated $185,000 to North Coast Earth First!'"

She'd talked to him the year before about making the donation — she'd said she was anticipating an inheritance from her mother's estate, and she wanted to make a big donation to his group. He'd told her to make it through the Trees Foundation, which handled the NCEF! Media office's finances through an arrangement that had been established years ago. (The Trees Foundation is an umbrella organization formed in 1991 to assist smaller environmental groups. As a 501(c)3 nonprofit, it can accept large, tax-deductible donations on behalf of affiliates, and provide professional resources. And it can lead large campaigns, like the one to save the Headwaters Forest back in the '90s.)

Well, now she'd finally done it.

Miller and Shunka agreed to meet at Fiesta Café in Sunny Brae, so she could tell him how she wanted the money spent: She wanted, straight away, for someone to organize a mediated workshop for the local Earth First! activists on ageism and sexism, issues she thought were fracturing the movement. And, she wanted the bulk of the donation to help support the forest activists who blockade logging roads and hunker up in ancient redwoods to fend off loggers' saws.

Not long after, Shunka was on his way to have lunch with some folks from the Trees Foundation, where they'd talk about Miller's wishes.

"Our media outreach was going to get a big boost," Shunka said. "The donation would keep the EF! office going for many years. So I walked into the Wildflower Café feeling elated, thinking we got all this money."

Barbara Ristow and Doug Wallace of the Trees Foundation were there. "I was super excited," Shunka said, "and I said, 'This is great, this big donation. Isn't it wonderful?' We ordered food, and still I'm all excited, talking about the money, but I notice they're looking nervously at each other. [Finally], they said, 'Well, we're just shocked that you think this money was for you.' And I was like, 'I just met with the donor, and that's what she said.' And they're like, 'Well, let's go ahead and plan the workshop and deal with that later.' I remember that, because it put me at ease."

After that, Shunka said he gave Trees a list of people he thought might benefit from the mediator-run workshop. "Some were people I knew had beefs with me, but I was willing to bring 'em into the circle and talk about it."

According to some vague accounts, the workshop was a disaster. One person who was there claims that Shunka, at one point, pounded his fists on the floor, blustered, then got up and stormed out, yelling as he walked away. Shunka says that's overblown.

"The letter from Kathryn Miller to Barbara Bristow said she wanted the mediation to be a safe place, safe to be emotional," he said. "And I think people are saying 'I freaked out.' The freak-out reports are exaggerated. It's just part of this ongoing character assassination. People say I was 'red-faced.' But my face is naturally red."

In late 2005, while Shunka was in Seattle, a friend called him from Arcata to say a woman had come by asking for the office key. She had a list of equipment she wanted to take away. The friend didn't give her the key.

When Shunka got back from Seattle, he discovered his reimbursement funds from Trees had been "frozen." He also learned about a letter someone in the NCEF! movement had circulated for signatures and then sent to Mark Knipper, who handled the Trees Foundation transactions for the NCEF! Media office. It said, in essence, "We don't want Shunka running EF!"

"I called the Trees Foundation," Shunka recalled. "I was sick, it was the middle of the winter, I'm trying to table, it's raining, it's cold. And Barbara Ristow told me, 'You just need to have a meeting [with the other Earth First!ers] and come to a group consensus on what the Trees Foundation funding should be used for."

The meeting never happened — nobody could agree to meet, said Mark Knipper, also in an interview last week. Knipper is a social worker and a long-time activist who had been the contact person between Trees and NCEF! Media. "So it ate itself," Knipper said. "And although I'm former Navy, a mariner, I said I'm not going down with this ship. So I divorced myself from it ... and signed it all back to Trees."

The NCEF! Media office was dropped from the Trees Foundation altogether.

Shunka and the NCEF! Media office never did see any of the big donation. Miller didn't even know that, he said, until she phoned him up in the summer of 2006, more than a year after she made the donation, to ask about a guy named "Jungle," who had been reported as missing on the NCEF! hotline. Miller was spending much of her time in Guatemala now, where she was raising fruit trees; after she'd made her big donation, Hurricane Stan had struck — she spent the ensuing year mopping up the mess.

First, Shunka told her Jungle was still missing. Then he told her about the money.

"I said, 'Yeah, they told me it wasn't for us,'" said Shunka. "And she said, 'I meant for all of it to go to you guys.' She sounded real upset. And I was like, 'I knew it! I knew it!'"

Shunka tried to sue Trees in small claims court, but it went nowhere.

Miller filed a claim against the Trees Foundation on Oct. 5, 2006, in Humboldt County Superior Court, seeking the return of the $185,000 plus interest so she could distribute the money herself.

And if she wins? "She may just spread it out more," said Shunka. "She's got tree planting ideas. Maybe she could buy a grove. She'd maybe not give it all to Earth First! this time. It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that Trees blew for us."

On an uncomfortably hot afternoon last week, four forest activists who'd agreed to an interview for this story — Jeff, Shaggy, Sparrow and Farmer — sat on the ground at the Arcata Marsh next to a log bench on which a teeming crew of red ants worked a splintered notch. Someone had come along here in 1999 and carved a grouping of faces — bearded, grimacing, possibly mourning faces — onto the log and signed it Daniel. The carving had been drenched in red paint, and burnished by years of sitters.

"It kind of reminds me of the memorial for Gypsy," said one of them. "With the red paint."

Gypsy was the forest name of David Nathan Chain, who in September 1998, during an Earth First! action at Grizzly Creek, was crushed to death by a tree felled by an enraged logger. Farmer, actually, was there — he was just 16, but had a year of activism already under his belt. And Shunka was there — it was Shunka's first forest action.

Farmer, Shag, Sparrow and Jeff first made it clear that they spoke for themselves alone, although they participate in various forest defense affinity groups: Farmer works for the Mattole Wildlands Defense Group now, watchdogging the California Department of Forestry for new timber harvest plans, and keeping an eye on a Pacific Lumber Co. watershed analysis. Shag, who saw his first redwood about five years ago, helps keep the Fern Gully treesit village in Freshwater functioning. Jeff, who grew up in the high desert, and fell in love with the woods, works with the Nanning Creek treesit just outside of Scotia, as well as other groups. Sparrow, who was drawn to forest action because the cultural landscape was "like a folktale" he couldn't resist, is with the Fern Gully affinity group. These groups are all part of the Humboldt Forest Defense Association, a collective with a website but no formal structure.

The HFDA sprang into being six years ago — about the time the entity called North Coast Earth First! had essentially dissolved. It would take a book to describe that drawn-out dissolution — a book of lost causes, won causes, waning media interest, Judi Bari's death, Gypsy's death, ego-spurred squabbles, interpersonal catastrophes, a war overseas, hurricanes. And while the HFDA activists might still cherish the Earth First! name — the movement — in their hearts, it's now been further complicated by what you might call the Shunka effect.

"I still feel in many ways solidarity with the greater Earth First! movement abroad," said Farmer. "But in this county, in this climate, if you say you're with the North Coast Earth First!, many people associate you with North Coast Earth First! Media."

Shunka revived the North Coast Earth First! office around 2002. And he did what previous office managers had done — tabled, put out news releases, wrote articles for other publications. But it wasn't like the old days, in the '90s, when hundreds of people were getting arrested in forest actions and the jail support phone and legal resources were in constant use.

Shunka first worked in an office in Eureka, then later moved to Arcata. He called his outfit the NCEF! Media Center. For a time, he and other "affinity groups" tried to work together. But he alienated some people. He took over the North Coast Earth First! website. He controlled the North Coast Earth First! email list of 300 or more subscribers to the news alerts. He sent out press releases on his own.

"I felt the North Coast Earth First! Media Center was a unilateral effort on Shunka's part," said Farmer. Whereas, in the old days, "spokespeople were decided on by the group. And if you wrote an article it was passed by everyone. I feel Shunka appointed himself spokesperson at some point."

Many also claim they've been subject to a lashing anger from Shunka.

"I won't work with him because I pledge nonviolence in my actions," said Shag. "I don't believe he pledges the same thing. He has exhibited violent behavior towards me and towards other activists in my presence."

"He's a bear," said Jeff, making claw-fists with his hands.

But the sad thing is, all of this infighting probably has done nothing to help the actual trees. And the mediation workshop Kathryn Miller wanted didn't fix matters. Now, there was her lawsuit.

"When I heard about this lawsuit, I thought, the Trees Foundation does not deserve to be attacked in that way," said Farmer. "There's much bigger issues that need to be dealt with — with Maxxam and old-growth logging. ...If you look at Fern Gully and Nanning Creek (the Bonanza timber harvest plan), there's hundreds of old growth acres still standing whose fate is unclear."

Shag put it more bluntly: "If [Miller] knew Shunka and wanted to get the money to North Coast Earth First! Media, she should've given it to Shunka. But if she was trying to get it to treesits and forest defense, then the money went to the right place.

"My problem is this whole representation thing. There's people in the trees — how do you know who to get the money to, to help them?"

Shunka knows that a lot of fellow activists aren't happy with his role in the donation dispute. He also knows how some people talk about him and say he's hard to get along with. "I'm just standing up for the truth," he said. "And people don't like it. To me, it feels like a small clique of people who don't like me. I feel a lot of love and support in this community."

He certainly doesn't come off right away as someone who's angry, or who lashes out, or who locks the office and doesn't let people in. Why, recently, he helped a young woman hook up with the treesitters so she could learn the ropes. (Shaggy said that's proof Shunka doesn't have direct connections with the people doing direct action; but you can't deny it's a connection.)

It's probably a bad idea to ask Darryl Cherney, one of the founders of the local Earth First! movement, what he thinks of Shunka Wakan, whose real name is Jason Wilson. (Shunka tells a story of how he was named by a Lakota medicine man on the banks of the Cheyenne River in South Dakota in 1995. "Shunka Wakan," meaning "great dog," is only part of it. There's a secret part after that — altogether, his name means "the humble man called horse.")

"Shunka's a wingnut," Cherney said over the phone last Friday, sounding cheerfully vitriolic. "I have a 10-verse song about Shunka."

There's no other word for it but "mean." But Cherney and Shunka have history — not all of it sour. Cherney said Shunka laughed when he heard the song, at least the first time.

"I met Shunka in 1998," Cherney said. "And I know he knew Julia ["Butterfly" Hill, whom Shunka had come west to find]. That was a good thing, helping Julia. That was good Shunka."

Cherney had even pushed for Shunka to go to Houston to talk with Charles Hurwitz, whose Maxxam Corp. bought out the old Pacific Lumber company back in 1985 and quickly became the forest activists' number one villain. Shunka went.

But now? "The current status of Shunka and me," Cherney said, "is that Shunka has sent me five or eight or nine e-mails threatening to sue me. Shunka is a joke."

Cherney can talk for hours about the problems he's had with Shunka over the years. His main point, though, is what has Shunka done for the trees lately?

"My question is, where's your topo maps?" he asked. "Where's your wilderness preservation proposal? Where's your lobbyist team in Sacramento?"

It has to be that, on some level, even the people in the movement who don't like Shunka understand somewhat where he's coming from. So he's emotional. Passionate. Perhaps he's caught up so completely in the cause he can't let go. Or, who knows — maybe he's a phony, like he accused Knipper of being back in 2005.

But being a forest activist comes with perils beyond the obvious physical ones.

"I'm really trying to have compassion for Shunka, even though he's kind of attacked us," said Susy Barsotti by phone from Laytonville a couple of weeks ago. Barsotti is president of the Trees Foundation board, and she says the lawsuit has held Trees hostage, unable to function fully. "I've been mystified and dismayed that he's participated like this in the suit. But Shunka witnessed Gypsy's death. And I think he may have post-traumatic stress syndrome. I don't think he's recovered from it. And that can affect your behavior."

A number of people mentioned this, actually, about Shunka. And he often refers to Gypsy's death himself. In an article titled "What Luna has taught me," posted on the website of Julia "Butterfly" Hill's organization, Circle of Life, Shunka writes: "I decided to commit to doing ground support after witnessing the death of David Nathan "Gypsy" Chain on September 17, 1998 ... I remember looking across the valley as we hiked up that day, seeing the rolling hills of forests and clear-cuts, and thinking out loud, "That's why we're here!" Seeing Gypsy's life taken from him, and then seeing the corruption and lies of the Humboldt County Sheriffs ... really opened my eyes to the situation our old-growth forests face."

Later, he did ground support for Hill in her second year in Luna. And in the same article on her website, something else Shunka writes indicates how ready he was to devote himself to a cause: "Being on the support team was the top priority in my life, and I was happy knowing that everything else revolved around when I'd be needed for the next supply run. I never felt lost because I knew what I was doing. That was a feeling I had not felt in years, between feeling dissatisfaction with life in college, and then more dissatisfaction with life as a minimum-wage worker after college. Before joining Julia's ground support team I was unhappy, even to the point of tears, wondering if my entire life was going to be a minimum-wage nightmare ...."

Pure devotion, without benefit of a little hypocrisy, could drive anyone batty. Deane Rimerman, the activist from Olympia who said it is Shunka who is on trial, said it's not uncommon for intense, stressful movements like Earth First! to produce an army of walking wounded. And he's been around, in forest actions up and down the coast, for long enough to know; he was the one, in fact, who "got the maps and led the first hikers up to the hill" to the Gypsy Mountain campaign and Luna treesit.

"In the forest activist movement, there's very little that's rewarding," Rimerman said. "There's a lot of post traumatic stress syndrome. All of us get it. Once you've been through the court process, and the jail process, and seen 1,000-year-old trees get cut down that you really cared about and thought you could save — it's devastating."

That alone, setting aside the troubles with Shunka, could explain the many rifts that have occurred within the local EF! ranks over the years. Josh Brown, who moved to Humboldt in 1995 right before the peak of the Headwaters campaign, said one of the unique qualities of Earth First! is that it "is primarily a youth movement."

"A lot of people that come through are young, are passionate — and it's a wonderful thing," he said. They get thrown into leadership positions quickly — and then they get burned out. Many move quickly on to other things. Brown stayed in longer than most. "When I left [in 2001], I was 30 years old. And I'd been a full-time activist since I was 18."

Paradoxically, said Brown, the youthful draw and the departure of seasoned activists leaves the movement with "no elders to kind of sit around and coach the [new kids]."

The movement also draws strong personalities, he said. Tenacious ones, too, like Shunka's.

"Shunka, I think he really does have a big heart," said Brown. "And I think he does care for the forest."

Last Friday, following the morning session of Miller v. Trees, a group of the Humboldt Forest Defense Association activists stood on the courthouse steps talking. The door opened, and Shunka walked out and down the steps toward the group. They didn't greet him. After a time, he tried to talk to one of them, Jeff. Jeff walked away. Shunka followed him, then stopped and talked to another guy. Then he stood alone again.

Trees Foundation Wins

The jury in the civil case Kathryn Miller v. the Trees Foundation decided in favor of Trees, after deliberating all day Tuesday. (See "Money on Trees," Oct. 4).

Miller is the long-time forest activist who inherited a bundle from her mother and then signed $185,000 over to the Trees Foundation. In her lawsuit, she claimed she had intended the money to be passed through Trees to one of its affiliates, North Coast Earth First! Media, run by Shunka Wakan. She claimed she had made her intentions clear, verbally and in writing, and that Trees had agreed to the conditions, then broken its promise and kept the money. Trees denied making such promises, and said it had never seen any letters or heard of instructions to give the money to NCEF! Media. (Also, somewhat relatedly, in criminal court on Tuesday Miller pleaded no contest to charges that she had made annoying phonecalls to Barbara Ristow of the Trees Foundation.)

So, that's that. Now, there are only the pieces to pick up.

For Shunka Wakan — featured in last week's Journal as a central figure in a messy nest of infighting that has fractured the current ranks of local Earth First!ians — it could be a long, lonely patching together of lost friends and broken alliances. Not only did he and Miller lose their attempt to retrieve her donation, but now he's been banned from the North Coast Co-op.

Yes, that happened last week. It was Thursday, around 4:15 in the evening, and two activists with the Humboldt Forest Defense Association were tabling — hawking brochures and such — outside the Co-op. It's an activity Shunka himself has spent many a day doing in that very same spot, raising cash to pay for his NCEF!Media outreach work and other causes. And, well, these two fellows, Jeff and Farmer, were on Shunka's shit list, now. They'd spoken gently, but unfavorably, about Shunka's doings in the North Coast Earth First! arena — said he lashed out at people, said he commandeered NCEF! resources, and so forth. Here's a snippet of Jeff's account of what happened, which he sent to the NCJ in an e-mail on Friday:

"Shunka was removed from the Arcata Co-op yesterday after a scuffle with myself and another activist around 5 p.m. Well, he wasn't exactly removed, but APD was called. He was asked to leave after threatening to flip over the HFD donation table while stating he was 'like Jesus in the marketplace ...'"

Sue Coulter, manager of the Arcata Co-op, recounted on Friday how an employee walking by heard the argument and went inside to get her. "So I went out to talk to [Shunka], because it's not the first time we've had problems," she said. "Most of the time, he's fine. Most of the time, I stick up for him." One time, she said, she even called the police to protect Shunka after someone had threatened him. "But he gets into arguments. I tried to talk to him. I told him to leave. ... He was causing a scene, right by the door, and I can't have it. He refused to leave. ... I said, fine. I went into the store. He followed me into the store, and he was still yelling at me, 'Oh, now you're going to call the police on me.'" Coulter called the police, but Shunka left before they arrived.

Shunka, waiting in the courthouse for the jury verdict Tuesday, said Coulter did indeed ask him to leave and he did, indeed, refuse to. As for the HFD tablers, he said he merely asked them why they had Trees Foundation literature on their table. "I said, 'Why do you want to represent these people?'" And then, he said, "Jeff accused me of embezzling — he said this in public. He said, 'You've embezzled thousands of dollars from the Earth First! movement through the years.' And I complained to one of the employees who was walking by. Because that's serious, accusing someone of embezzling."

But Shunka said the whole thing's yet another attack on him. "I don't consider I was yelling. We were talking. I'm an emotional person, I concede to that. I speak from my heart. I don't scream at people. I would love to — but I don't."

In his email, Jeff with HFD predicted Shunka would leave town within weeks, if not sooner. But at the courthouse, even before the verdict, Shunka said he wasn't going anywhere.

"I'm just going to continue to run the Earth First! office and continue to call Humboldt County home," he said. He's also going to write a letter to the Co-op, complaining about how he gets scapegoated and booted out of there even when other people, he says, are the culprits. And, as for the Miller v. Trees case, he said, he and Miller may now take their complaint to another venue.

Tribal Night 6

Anna and I have in the works Tribal Night 6. The High Five Bar (the same establishment that has hosted all previous TNs) has asked Raks Jahanni to organize another one just like the last one. Then I thought “just like the last one”? What made the last one so special??? Then it hit me…I think it was the dancers that stayed after the show they remember the most. Good times…

Anyway, Anna and I said “sure, why not?”, and the bar says “ok, you have October 20”. Moments later we secured a more than eager local band who heard the words belly and dancers and agreed to play after the show and beat their chests. I think the newly single drummer was the one that spoke up first. They’re not the usual type of band you would see at a belly dancing event, but then again Anna and I aren’t “usual” either. The band rocks my socks off and that’s all that matters.

So here’s the thing…we can’t have a Tribal Night if we don’t have any dancers that want to perform, right? We would like as many people to get back to us within A DAY to tell us if they would like to perform or we won’t have it…seriously! Again, the date is Oct. 20 (a Saturday), and everyone is welcome. You best believe this will be a Halloween themed dance night…we can’t let slide by the one time of year when Anna feels normal, can we??? Feel free to come whacked out in your most disturbing ensemble. Our special friends in dance (Zimra, Chandara Gamal (and troupe), Kira LaFave, Yasmilah, Zahira, Sacred Shimmy, Rachyl, Gypsy Soul, Laylia, Khalida Tribe, Crescent Moon) who have supported us in the past are always welcome to perform. Hit me back if you’re down….

1. Go to the library. Columbus's library system is consistently rated as the best or one of the best in the nation. The main library is interesting and air-conditioned.

2. Check out the Metro Parks system. Even if you aren't terribly outdoorsy, you may find something that will provide a couple hours' worth of pleasant diversion a couple times a year. The Parks & Rec system oversees additional greenspace.

3. Music in the Air.

4. Shakespeare in the Park.

5. The Gallery Hop.

6. The Art Museum and the Columbus College of Art & Design.

7. Knock around the Ohio State campus.

8. Shop for used books: there are easily a dozen good used bookstores here: The Book Loft, The Village Bookshop, Areopagitica, the Book Harbor, three Half Price Books shops, Acorn...

9. People-watch at Easton or Polaris.

10. The Ohio Historical Society.

Notice I didn't mention any restaurants or sporting events. those are another story entirely.

Anyone who complains that there's nothing to do in Columbus is being whiny.

The Ka-tet (Earth Guardian Base Camp): We are a group of friends brought together to create a camp of fun and openess. We will have a participation dome with games tounaments during the day and projection art at night. It will be very interactive and will even have times for other people to present their art.

The Laser Dome: In a nut shell our camp is a psychodelic laser experiance contained within a 42' diameter 5/8 geodesic dome, with a 18x20 tent enterance. Inside the dome is a 7000 watt sound system, with 8 medium powered red & green lasers, and other intelligent lighting. Our dj's provide a healthy mix of trance, house, breaks, and hip-hop. Also every day at dusk we project psychodelic movies inside the dome during what we call Cryptik Theater.

Hum 'n Hug North: Wander into our realm where a gazillion musical instruments are everywhere waiting to be picked up and played, waiting to have strains of music of many sorts coaxed out of them. Jamming. Consorting. Communing. Fun. Come play - come jam - come hug! Originally started at Transformus, the Southeast Regional Burn, the Ohio contingent of the group looks forward to being a part of Scorched Nuts!

Camp Happy Hour: It's always Happy Hour with us! We provide concoctions of all varietys to quench your thirst. We have a comfy chill space, a little bit of lawn art, and tons of fun!

Tribal Belly Dance Camp: Fun, Funky & Powerful tribal belly dancing. Including workshops and performances!

Blinky Blinky Blinky: I've done a bunch of art on the Playa, The L2K ring, the L3K ring last year, and the hypknowtrons. I'll bring the hypknowtrons and set up some very nice blinky art.

I just took a new job at OSU & will be moving from Sacramento, CA to Columbus this summer. When I visited the school, someone showed me around town a little bit, pointing out some nice neighborhoods. I'm just looking for a bit of advice on where to live in Columbus. I've been living in suburb hell here in CA and am dying to live in a more interesting, diverse, pretty, and convenient neighborhood. I'm looking for a small (2BR) house to rent with a little bit of a yard (for my dog). I'd like to be close to campus, but not in a student ghetto. Are there any zones that are close to campus, with decent housing, where you can walk to a grocery store or cafe?

I remember seeing Victorian Village, German Village, and Clintonville, which all seemed rather nice. I've been checking out Craigslist & those areas have listings in my price range (trying to stay under $1000/month).

Any other ideas are greatly appreciated! Thanks!

My name is Bob. Among other characteristics, I am a native born US citizen (at least 3rd generation, who knows b4 that?), middle aged, Caucasian male, registered to vote as an independent.

I invite you to read and respond to my ramblings. Some will be ad hoc; some will be those that have been living with me for decades.

My favorite topics are those least likely to be discussed aloud in 'polite' company, i.e. religion and politics. Sex is discussed ad infinitum in other forums.

This is my first attempt at 'blogging' (should I call it 'Blobing'?).

I guess I'll find out.

I will apologize first for my writing style. I will write in the manner that I speak. I was raised in the mid-west USA, I speak borderline hillbilly (no offense intended). I was brought up in the USA b4 political correctness reached its peak in absurdity. I will use the world 'man' to indicate huMANity, no offense is meant for the females in this life.

My first actual thought to be spouted is this:

I believe in GOD! Not his prophets.

Because of the JCI (Judeo/Christian/Islamic) culture, we are in a state of war in parts of the world that have NO better reason than "My prophet is better than your prophet" is the battle cry of each side. Other belief systems are pacifistic in nature and are not the cause of many wars (e.g. Buddhists).

GOD is not defined by any man.

I cannot attempt to tell you what GOD is. I will however attempt to ask you to agree to some things that GOD isn't.

GOD fits in no man's book!

The holy book that my protestant mother exposed me to was called the Bible. In Greek, Bible translates to “Book”. The Book that I was exposed to began with these four words:

In The Beginning, GOD…..

These are the only ‘scripture’ words in my book, The Boble. All words that follow are interpretations of the first 4. I have wrestled with the first word, I think that the first word of the Boble should be ‘Before’. So that the text is:

Before the beginning, GOD.

Beyond these 4 words, man had added his story (parse out the word ‘history’) to the book, obscuring the simple fact of GOD with the complex dogma of man.

The Book of Bob (referenced later as B.O.B.) begins with the 4 words afore mentioned.
It is a living/growing book that I welcome you to read/edit/add to/etc. You have my permission to copy, distribute, quote in any fashion the contents of the B.O.B. Please just direct those others to this site for updates.

The J/C cultures have had as part of their base law system the ’10 Commandments’.
Although this B.O.B. has been my mind for 4 decades, I have only come up with 3 ‘tenets’ of Bobism. The first of the 3 was directly swiped from the American Medical Society’s Hippocratic Oath:

First – Do No Harm
Second – Do Good
Third – Protect Those in Need

2 and 3 may seem to be a bit ambiguous. I believe in GOD, and Good. I believe in Evil, and Devils. I believe in the inherent goodness of life, and in the goodness of most men (humanity). Therefore, most men do not need to be told what is right and what is wrong, most men KNOW what is right and wrong. They may need guidance to differentiate subtleties, but regardless of their actions, most know.

I’m still working on 4+

I’m open to suggestions.

Hi all. I'm moving to Columbus next week from Savannah and lived in Oakland Cali 10 years before that. My dad's a prof. at OSU. I needed a good city to start over in and as one of my friends says (he's a native of Ghana), if you can't make it in Columbus, you can't make it anywhere.

I've only been to Columbus for short stints visiting the folks and my little sister just left Columbus after living there for 3 years for the same reason I'm moving there.

Here's my question, what kinds of things, places, do recommend for a 30 something (soon to be a 40 something) single gal to do in Columbus other than hanging out at the Blue Danube (my friend's favorite dive bar)?

Westland Barbie: This Spanish-speaking-only Barbie comes with a 1984 Toyota with expired temporary plates and three baby Skippers
in the back seat, but no car seats. The optional Ken doll comes with a cowboy hat, shovel and work gloves. Ken comes with his own 1979 Ford pickup with a Telemundo bumper sticker, tinted windows, and Our Lady of Guadalupe rear window stickers. BIKE LOVERS BOYCOTT BROTHERS (ON FRONT ST.)

I’m not an imbecile. I had to go to Brothers. I know it sucks. It’s over. It’s lame. It’s full of poser wanna be cool kids in sequins and muffin tops. Ya still. I know. Terrible service. It basically completely sucks. I think.

My coworkers, despite my pleading for any other venue, decided to have a going away party for two of them there. So I went. Unfortunately.

But it started off as a good night. I went home after work to let my puppy out. Decided to ride my bicycle back over to Brothers.

It was a really beautiful night. I rode through Goodale Park rolling through the dark. Saying hello and smiling to other pedestrians. Helmet on. E.L. wire illuminated. A treat in February in Central Ohio. I felt like I lived in a good community.

I got to Brothers. It was empty except for my large group and a few stragglers here or there. I locked my Bicycle to the 7 foot high wrought iron fence out front. The one that surrounds the patio.

I locked it with my $64 (or so) Kryptonite U lock and a $15 cable.

I went in for an unfortunate three hours of so-called happiness. I don’t drink anymore, so I hung out drinking soda water and cranberry and chilling with my fellow employees.

After a while, my friend and I decided to get some sushi. We went to Tyfoon – which by the way was absolutely lovely. Gorgeous interior right down to the dried flowers and candles on the back of the toilet. Class act. And the waiter was pleasant and fun and made good jokes. We thoroughly enjoyed it there. Ahhh. Again, thinking life is good.

So I get back to Brothers after about an hour to grab my bike and go home. There were about ten guys in matching red Brothers shirts standing around my bicycle with tools and lascivious grins.

Anyway – back to the story. By the time I got there, these dudes had taken a power drill to my Kryptonite U lock where the key goes in. So my key, which was glimmering in my hand ready for action under the almost full moon, was useless.

They had already clipped the cable. I was sorry I missed that part. It probably gave a good “click!”

The dudes kept telling me it was private property and I had no right to have my bike there. Now, Imagine a jerky dude with a bunch of leering ones in the background in matching outfits. Now press play and repeat it’s private property it’s private property over and over until you puke. That’s what happened and it was very annoying. I decided not to get into the details of how legal rights and responsibilities change when even a private property owner opens the property up to the public and his ensuing legal duties towards business invitees. I was just pissed and didn’t feel like talking to these dopes.

Well, the drill wasn’t working, so they got the power saw. Now, I was trying to call my friend and see if she could come back. She’s a lawyer. I thought it might have helped. The problem was, my cell was dead so I plugged it into the same outlet that the power saw was in. And this is the kicker, the matching dudes pulled my cord out. And put their hands over the plug so I couldn’t plug my phone back in.

(I wish I’d caught a photo when the sparks were flying into my eyes while I was talking on the phone but these guys unplugged it and I didn’t get it.)

I momentarily felt maternal and worried they might electrocute their little hands. Just for a moment. And then the private property chant continued but now with regard to me using their electricity. They also tried the excuse that they thought the bike was abandoned. My helmet was hanging on the armrests. Does that seem abandoned to you? I mean - pleez!

They started taunting me though the fence. Saying to tell them what I really thought of them. They said go on. You know you want to. We can take it. - Really? Do people still talk like that? Or had they just seen “Accused?”

And they refused to pay me the $80 or so to replace my locks.

Long story short – Don’t go to Brothers. They’re mean and they hate people like us.

(This is exactly what happened as I saw it. It’s just my perception. Obviously, not everyone would have described the situation in the same way. Don’t sue me. It’s all true except the sarcastic parts and it’s of public interest). see you elsewhere …

CANTON Margaret Hughes first noticed a gray cat in her 10th Street NW
neighborhood about two years ago.

Tugging at her heartstrings, the feline cried for attention and begged
for something to eat.

Unable to resist, Hughes set a food bowl outside her house. A pillow
and blanket were tucked into a wicker basket for a bed. She named the
cat Ghost, and limited the animal to the outdoors since she had an
indoor cat.

Another cat entered the picture later. She fed that one, too, once in
the morning and once in the late afternoon.

"I was just trying to save the cats from starving to death," Hughes said.

Then the 69-year-old got a notice from the Canton Health Department on
Jan. 6 ordering her to stop feeding the cats and to remove the bed. If
she doesn't comply by Monday, Hughes would be expected to show up for
a hearing, and could face up to a $100 fine and 90 days in jail, said
Law Director Joseph Martuccio.

"They always seek voluntary cooperation," Martuccio said.

Hughes, meanwhile, sees little harm in feeding the cats, saying she's
"trying to do something humane."

"I felt bad for the cats because they're on a porch meowing," she
said. "They're hungry, and I fed them."

Still, Hughes said, she's complying with the order, removing the food
bowl and bed.

Food dishes can attract raccoons, skunks and rats, he said. Food left
for cats also can lead to a colony of the four-legged creatures, said
Jackie Godbey, assistant director of the Stark County Humane Society.

The city and county health departments do not pick up strays. Neither
does the Stark County dog warden's office, which refers inquiries
about stray cats to the Stark County Humane Society.

The Humane Society accepts cats and puts them up for adoption, Godbey
said.

"They are the most important resource we have for cats," Wade said of
the agency.

People who have strays or want to get rid of a cat should not dump
them in rural parts of the county, Godbey said.

"They'll see a barn, a farm and they'll take (cats there), and they
don't think that 800 people have done that (in the same area) over the
years," she said.

I don't particularly wanna go back to O-hi-o, but I feel like I gotta go back: I feel a sense of calling to help several friends in Columbus. In fact, I really didn't want ever to live in Ohio again: too cold in the winters, too humid in the summers.

Yet here I go back again. I'll be back Tuesday night. I'm most likely to live in North Linden, though I may be couch-surfing for a bit.

I moved from Columbus to Tennessee on very short notice, and now I'm moving back on equally short notice. Should be interesting! And the whole process seems to be surrounded by good energy, so on I go...

Pagan Festival in Ohio

The Pagan Community Council of Ohio is having its annual Labor Day Weekend festival, called Summerset, again this year.

Just received this Summerset Update:

We have a wonderful variety of speakers lined up this year. Three Cranes Grove is performing our main ritual this year. We have Hugan the Bard as well as Columbus local Willie Phoenix planned as musical entertainment. Then add in the fact that Camp Crooked Lane is wonderful - rolling tree-lined meadows, wooded hiking trails, a calm lake complete with bull frog serenades each night...Summerset is lining up to be fantastic! The Summerset flyers are being printed & distribution will begin within the next 48 hrs.

I will post another update once I have the flyer on this festival.

Rainbow Gathering Update

The Feds demanded that the Rainbow Gathering be relocated this year. Supposedly there was an endangered bat near the area that was selected so the gathering has moved. The gathering is now being held about 70 miles south of Elkins....alot of people are upset about the move as they feel the feds have won .... I'm not goinguntil after Comfest - next Monday - so alot of the issues will be cleared up by then .... As of today, there are about 500 people onsite. Ignore all rumours of cancellation --peace, lorin

The harsh crack down by the Forest Service has had it's impact. Word from the site is that there was a council on June 18, and that some folks have decided to move to another site at Cranberry Glade Botanical Area, which was recommended by the Forest Service. A permit has been accepted for for that location by USFS. This is about 70 miles or so from the existing site near Elkins that the Forest Service shut down yesterday. Directions: take 219 70 miles south of Elkins to Mill Point. Turn Right on 55/39. Go 6 miles to Rd 150. Turn Right on 102, which is 6/10ths of a mile past 150. Welcome Homeless. That spot appears to be here. Anyway, Kiddie Village has moved to the new site, some CALM folks, and what's left of the water system

Since there are still some people at the Elkins area site, equipment, friends, etc... I figured I should keep those directions up for people that need to go there. It does look like folks are moving to the newly permitted site with a public road running through main circle. From Elkins, WV, take 33 east past Bowden to Alpena (approx.13 mi). At the Alpena Lodge & Cafe (the only thing here) take a left (north) up County Rd. 12, also known as Galdwin Rd and CR26 in some areas. CR12 goes thru the countryside and dives down toward the Glady Fork (approx 5 mi). At the bottom of the hill, just before CR12 crosses the Glady Fork River & turns into CR10-Sully Rd, take a hard (120%) left on to FR 162, which is Bus Village. Go to the gated end of Bus Village (FR162). Just beyond the gate is a meadow on the left. At the back right of this meadow is Easy Street, a gentle grassy ancient railroad bed, which goes off to the left. Follow Easy Street up to Main Trail and take a right to Main Circle, which is the third meadow on the trail. From the East, from Harrisonburg, VA take 33 west into Wavy past Franklin, WV and Seneca Rocks. Stay on US 33 past Wymer to Alpena, take a right on CR12 and follow the above.

Some folks are holed up at the strip mine, which was recommended by the Forest Service, but the scouts said it had bad water. Folks on that site claim the water's fine because it was a coal mine, not a mineral mine. A topo map of the Barton Knob (the strip mine) site is here. Dierctions to that site are: Elkins, South on 219 to town of Huttonsville. Head East on 250/92 to FR227. South on 227 to Strip mine. They say they'll be moving to the Cranberry Glade site, probably today since there is now a permit.

It's a sad day in Rainbow Land. After 33 years, the Federal Goverment has suceeded in taking control of the Rainbow Gathering through massive harrasment and ticketing. I'm sure they're pleased with themselves. Our constitutional right to peaceable assembly on public land is now gone along with many of our other civil rights. It's obvious that peaceful people aren't desired by a goverment that's stated you are either with us, or you are the enemy to be eliminated... Why are we promoting freedom in other countries and we can't promote it here at home for US citizens ?

For those that want to help preserve freedom for US citizens in our own country to assemble peaceably please contact the West Virginia Congressional Representatives, a West Virginia Newspaper, or a West Virginia TV Station and let your views be heard.

I've set up an email list to answer questions about the site for folks trying to pay attention to what's going on, and as a contact point for media. I'll be on site shortly, but hopefully others will answer questions and make updates while I'm in the woods. Columbus area dancers will give pre-concert performances before the show. Habeeba's goes on at 8:20. Oojami on at 9.

Annual Rainbow Gathering

Elkins, WV is only 297.9 miles or 5 hours, 15 mins. (according to Yahoo Maps) from Columbus, Ohio.

I am traveling there after ComFest....hope to see Ohio Family there.

INFORMATION ON GATHERING LOCATION

After consulting with the scouts, Spring Council consensed that Seed Camp will start on Tuesday, June 14. At that time all folks who are in holding camps will go onto the site. On the same day, the lightlines will announce the specific directions and the Howdy Folks will be distributed.

The scouts requested that Spring Council wait to make the final decision as to site location until the scouts could work out various site issues. The Spring Council process was very open and loving with a number of very experienced family in attendance.

The gathering will be held in West Virginia in the Monongahela National Forest somewhere in the vicinity of the town of Elkins. Since several sites in the same area are still being considered, the exact distance of the site from Elkins is still unclear.

If you are planning to fly, consider flying into Charleston, Pittsburgh, Baltimore or Washington DC. Driving from Pittsburgh would be the fastest; it is approximately 150 miles away and Baltimore the furthest distance, at approximately 250 miles. At this point a quick check of airline prices showed DC to be the cheapest, however, airline prices fluctuate every day or so, so it is best to compare prices. If you are considering taking a bus, the closest stop is in Clarksburg, which is about 50 miles from Elkins. Greyhound bus service is available to Clarksburg from Pittsburgh, Baltimore and DC.

For specific directions check with your favorite Rainbow website or call the light lines after June 14.

On The Death Of Marla Ruzicka
April 18, 2005

Mr. President, I want to join my friend from California in paying
tribute to a remarkable young woman from Lakeport, California, Marla
Ruzicka.

Marla was the founder of a humanitarian organization called "Campaign
for Innocent Victims in Conflict," which is devoted to helping the
families of Afghan and Iraqi civilians who have been killed or suffered
other losses as a result of U.S. military operations. Marla died in
Baghdad on Saturday from a car bomb, while she was doing the work she
loved and which so many people around the world admired her for.

I met Marla three years ago, which she first came to Washington at
the young age of 26. She had been in Afghanistan, where she had seen
the
effects of U.S. bombing mistakes that had destroyed the homes and lives
of innocent Afghan civilians.

In one or two incidents, wedding parties had been bombed. In others,
bombs had missed their targets and destroyed homes and neighborhoods. I
remember one incident where every member of a family of 16 people was
killed, except a young child and her grandfather.

These were the cases Marla spoke about, and she felt passionately
that the United States should help those families piece their lives
back
together.

It didn’t take long to convince me because she was so obviously
right. We not only had a moral responsibility to those people who had
suffered because of our mistakes, we also had an interest in mitigating
the hatred and resentment towards Americans that those incidents had
caused.

And it was Marla’s initiative – going to Afghanistan, meeting those
families, getting the media’s attention, coming back here and meeting
with me and my staff – that led to the creation of a program that has
contributed more than $8 million for medical assistance, to rebuild
homes, to provide loans to start businesses, and for other aid to
innocent Afghan victims of the military operations.

From Afghanistan Marla went to Iraq, where she arrived a day or two
after Saddam’s statue fell. She and an Iraqi colleague, Faiez Ali
Salem,
who died at the same time as Marla, organized dozens of Iraqi
volunteers
to conduct surveys around the country of civilian casualties.

She returned to Washington, and again, her efforts led to the
creation of a program – now known as the Civilian Assistance Program –
which has provided $10 million to the families and communities of Iraqi
civilians killed by U.S. and other Coalition forces. Another $10
million
was allocated for this program just last
week.

To my knowledge, this is the first time we have ever provided this
type of assistance to civilian victims of U.S. military operations, and
it would never have happened without the initiative, the courage, and
the incomparable force of character of Marla Ruzicka.

Mr. President, in my 31 years as a United States Senator I have met
lots of interesting and accomplished people from all over the world. We
all have. Nobel prize winners, heads of State, people who have achieved
remarkable and even heroic things in their lives.

I have never met anyone like Marla Ruzicka. There are many stories
about Marla, and some of them are being recounted in the hundreds of
press articles that have appeared in just the past 48 hours.

One story I remember happened the day after Marla arrived in
Washington from Kabul. She had heard there was a hearing in the Senate
where Secretary Rumsfeld and General Franks were going to testify.

Thinking, perhaps a bit naively, that they might talk about the
problem of civilian casualties, she decided to go. After the hearing
was
over and disappointed that the issue she cared so deeply about had not
been mentioned, Marla walked straight up to Secretary Rumsfeld, and
from
the witness table, down the hallway and outside to his car, she did not
stop talking to him about the families of civilians she had met who had
been killed or injured and the need to do something to help them.

As anyone who knew Marla discovered, she was not someone who it was
easy to say no to. In fact it was almost impossible, and that was not
simply because she was insistent. It was because she had been there,
she
knew what war was about, she had seen the tragic results, and she was
not about blaming anyone. She was about helping, in whatever ways she
could.

Marla saw her work as part of the best of what this country is about.
It was the face of a compassionate America that she believed in, and
that she wanted the people of Afghanistan and Iraq to see.

It took time to realize that Marla wasn’t just a blond, bundle of
energy and charisma – she was in fact a person of great intellect and
courage who realized that if she wanted to help war victims it wasn’t
enough to protest. She needed to work with people who could help her do
it.

And that meant the Congress, the U.S. military, the U.S. Embassy, and
the press. She quickly understood that, and she made the choice to put
politics aside and focus on the victims.

It did not take long before the U.S. military saw the importance of
what she was doing, and started to help her. There were several Civil
Affairs officers with whom Marla worked like a team, she finding the
cases, and they arranging for the plane to airlift a wounded child to a
hospital, or some other type of assistance.

Marla became one of our most beloved Ambassadors.

I think one of the reasons so many people around the world feel
Marla's loss so deeply is because we saw how important her work was and
that it meant taking risks that the rest of us are unwilling to take.
In
a way she was not only helping the families of Iraqi war victims, she
was also helping us.

Until she finally became an innocent victim of war herself.

Marla has been called many things. An angel of mercy. A ray of
sunshine in an often dangerous and dark world. One person who knew her
well described Marla as being as close to a living saint as they come,
and I suspect that’s how many of us feel.

Speaking for myself, I have never met, nor do I ever expect to meet
again, someone so young who gave so much of herself to so many people,
and who made such a difference doing it.

Our hearts go out to her parents, Cliff and Nancy Ruzicka, who had
the courage to let Marla be the person she wanted to be. Not that there
would have been any stopping her.

Our job now is to carry on the work that Marla started, because it is
so important. That is what I am committed to, and I look forward to
working with my friend from California to honor Marla in that way.

I hardly ever send out mass mailings, but I think this one is important. If you have a moment, please read.

If you haven't already heard by now, a shining light in the fight for humanitarian aid and civil rights was lost this weekend. Her name was Marla Ruzicka. She was a dear friend of mine, and I miss her terribly. But I know that across the globe, in war torn countries, lives an even greater void in the hearts of the people she helped.

She was a truly amazing woman. Hell, she mooned the president in the name of public power and sold beer on the black market to raise money for wounded civilians. What's not to like?

Please take a moment to read a little about her. It would mean a lot to me to know that people know about the work she gave her life for.

I think a lot of people would think that what she undertook was crazy. And it probably was. It's crazy to have so much optimism. It's crazy to believe that it's possible for a lone unarmed slender young woman to go traipsing around a war zone knocking on doors. It's crazy to believe she could save people and help families. It's crazy to think you can just call up a senator enough times to raise $20 million to help wounded civilians (a completely unprecedented concept). It's crazy to travel around with $20 in your bank account and think you can raise millions.

But that's exactly what she did.

Maybe that kind of crazy is just a lack of cynicism, an optimism that we tend to believe is impossible.

Maybe that's a kind of crazy we could all benefit from. It's the kind of crazy she's inspired me to strive toward.

I reside in Columbia Maryland, my partner commutes to wash DC
5 days a week. Temperatures and temperments seem complacent and cool. 2 days of swinging high temps, degrees went from below average to above average, high winds routine.
Any notice of increased communication skills with local wildlife.
Ok I'll remain to see any reply. Columbus is my home state, adore serpent mounds off 70 w.

Cirque Du Soleil Returns to Columbus

I posted this on another tribe, so sorry if you've seen this, but I'm pretty excited.

The Cirque show, Verekai is coming to Columbus, and if you've never seen the Cirque, you should, they're pretty amazing. I saw Drailion when it came through town and it was a darn good show, I've seen Verekai already once, in NYC, and I'm looking forward to seeing it again. They'll be in town in August, and I'm sure tickets will go quickly!

And who says Columbus doesn't get culture? :)
